DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU FILL SPINACH WITH MORE LEAD THE MORE YOU WASH IT?

Andon Arakelyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sarbak Metal asked: How many times do you wash spinach? I wash it as much as I can to remove the soil.

Andon Arakelyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sarbak Metal asked: "How many times do you wash spinach?"

Well, I wash it as much as I can to remove the soil.

Six or seven times...

"Do you know that you fill it with more lead the more you wash it?" he asked.

As he continued with his questions, I started to consider the taps at home to be my arch enemy:

"What kind of water do you use to brush your teeth?"

"What kind of water do you cook your food in?"

He insistently says 'lead water'.

We fill ourselves with carcinogenic lead as we try to ensure cleanliness.

Andon Arakelyan has a history of 55 years in the Thursday Bazaar. He started working as a plumber's apprentice and has been manufacturing brass rods in his factory in Çerkezköy for 35 years.

He manufactures 40 thousand tons of products annually in a market with a volume of 150 thousand tons.

So, what is a brass rod? Armature manufacturers purchase brass rods and manufacture valves, taps and fixtures with them.

He tells me as if describing a dish recipe:

"I mix 58 kilos of copper, 39 kilos of zinc and 3 kilos of lead together. I melt them and make brass rods. After that, armature brands purchase them from me, forge them, smelt in specific dimensions and manufacture fixtures."

If it is threatening human health, they should as well not add lead in it:

"That cannot be" he says. "If we do not add lead, we cannot process brass and then turn it into fixtures. Lead ensures brittleness."
